Interesting facts about Huntsville...
- Birthplace of Alabama. Leaders of the Alabama Territory gathered at Constitution Village
in 1819 to petition the U.S. Congress to grant Alabama statehood.
- Cotton King. As the largest and fastest-growing early town in Alabama, Huntsville became the cotton trading center of the Tennessee Valley during the 1840’s.
Although agricultural dominance eventually waned, Huntsville remained a cotton market town well into the 1950’s.
- America's Space Capital. An elite group of German rocket scientists were brought to Redstone Arsenal in 1950 to develop rockets for the U.S. Army.
Dr. Wernher von Braun and his team of scientists eventually put the first American in space and transported the first astronauts to the Moon using the Saturn V rocket.
- Home to Redstone Arsenal. From 1941 until the present time, Redstone Arsenal
has been the Army’s most capable weapon system development center for missiles and helicopters. It is supported by a highly skilled and knowledgeable work force – consisting of more than 17,000 government and private sector people,
both on and off the installation’s 38,000 acres.
- Home to Marshall Space Flight Center. Activated in 1960, MSFC is one of NASA's largest and most diversified installations.
Center responsibilities include key space shuttle and space station technologies, next generation space transportation and propulsion systems, management of projects and direct studies that will help pave the way back to the moon,
and a variety of other scientific endeavors to benefit future space exploration.
